How it began

Our story

Happy Yak Tours was created from a genuine love of Nepal's mountains, people, and trekking culture. For us, guiding is not a service industry transaction it is a way of sharing something we care deeply about.

The company is focused on helping travellers experience the Everest region in a way that feels safe, personal, and truly memorable. Our goal is not just to guide a route, but to share the spirit of the Himalayas the silence of a high ridge at dawn, the warmth of a Sherpa family's tea house, the feeling of arriving somewhere you had only ever imagined.

We believe that the best mountain journeys are built on authentic local knowledge, thoughtful pacing, and genuine hospitality. Those values guide every trek we run.

Our mission

To share the beauty, culture, and adventure of the Himalayas through honest local guidance and meaningful trekking experiences.

Meet Makar

Portrait of Makar, owner of Happy Yak Tours
Makar
Owner & Lead Guide, Happy Yak Tours

Makar, the owner of Happy Yak Tours, comes from a small mountain village reached by a two-day journey from Lukla. Growing up close to the trails and landscapes of the Everest region gave him a lifelong connection to the Himalayas and a deep respect for mountain life.

He has spent countless hours exploring the trails and peaks of the region, building deep local knowledge and a genuine love for the mountains in every season. Over the years, that knowledge became the foundation of everything Happy Yak Tours does.

Makar also loves meeting people from different parts of the world and sharing the beauty of his home with them. Through Happy Yak Tours, he hopes to create trekking experiences that are personal, welcoming, and truly unforgettable.

“The mountains have given me so much, and I love sharing their beauty and spirit with people from around the world.”

We avoid the rushed and commercialised. Our routes include village stays, local food, and real moments of cultural connection.

Small group focus

Groups stay small so every guest receives proper attention from their guide and the trail feels like yours.

Honest guidance

We give you straight advice about difficulty, timing, and what to expect. No upsells, no vague promises.

What we believe

The values behind every journey

These principles guide how we plan every trek, speak to every guest, and move through these mountains.

Respect for the mountains

The Himalayas are not a backdrop they are living, sacred landscapes. We move through them with care, humility, and awareness.

Care for every guest

Your safety and wellbeing come first, before summit goals or schedules. We treat every traveller as a guest in our home.

Authentic local connection

We prioritise genuine encounters over curated performances. The villages, people, and traditions along the trail are the real experience.

Responsible tourism

We keep groups small, support local tea houses, and practice leave-no-trace principles on every route we run.

Honest communication

We tell you what a trek actually involves the challenges as well as the rewards. Trust is built on honesty, not polished sales copy.

Thoughtful planning

Good trekking logistics protect your experience. Permits, pacing, altitude days, and logistics are handled with care before you ever land in Kathmandu.

Our guides

Guided by people who know these trails

Every Happy Yak Tours trek is led by guides with deep, first-hand knowledge of the Khumbu. These are people who grew up near these trails, who understand the altitude, the weather, and the people of the region in ways that come only from years of lived experience.

Whether you are a first-time trekker or a seasoned adventurer, our guides adapt to your pace and needs. They are experienced with Everest-area logistics, fluent in the demands of acclimatisation, and committed to making sure every guest feels safe, supported, and genuinely welcomed into the mountains.

Local trail knowledge

Our guides know every section of the Khumbu from the teahouses with the best dal bhat to the quiet detours the trail maps don't show.

Acclimatisation-aware pacing

We follow strict altitude protocols, with rest days and daily monitoring built into every itinerary above 3,500m.

Guest-focused support

From the first inquiry to your last descent, we are reachable, responsive, and focused on making your experience exceptional.

Clear communication

No surprises on the trail. Pre-trek briefings, daily route explanations, and honest conversations about conditions are standard.

Your safety, our responsibility

Trek with confidence

Every practical detail from permits and pacing to altitude monitoring and logistics is handled by people who have done this many times before.

Licensed local guides

All our guides are certified, government-registered professionals from the Khumbu region not hired contractors from the city. These are their mountains.

Carefully planned itineraries

Each route is designed with the right pace, acclimatisation days, and altitude gain built to be enjoyed fully, not just survived.

Support before and during

From your first question to your last descent, our team is reachable, responsive, and focused on your experience every step of the way.

Permits and logistics handled

We manage Sagarmatha National Park entry permits, TIMS cards, and all trekking logistics so you arrive prepared and stress-free.

Small groups or private treks

Groups are capped to keep the experience personal. Private departures are also available for those who prefer to go at their own pace.

Guest-first planning

We match you to the right route for your fitness, schedule, and ambitions with honest advice, not a sales pitch.

Tread lightly, travel well

A deeper connection to Nepal

The Everest region is not just a destination it is a living landscape shaped by Sherpa communities who have called these mountains home for generations. We are grateful to work here, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Happy Yak Tours is committed to a style of trekking that respects local culture, supports the communities along the trail, and leaves the mountains better than we found them. That means eating in local tea houses, following the customs of the Khumbu, and moving at a pace that honours the place rather than rushing through it.

Meaningful travel is not about ticking summits. It is about the people you meet, the culture you learn from, and the care you bring to somewhere extraordinary.

Support local tea houses

We stay and eat at locally owned lodges, keeping economic benefit within the communities of the Khumbu.

Respect local culture

Our guides introduce guests to Sherpa customs, monastery etiquette, and the significance of the landscape they walk through.

Travel thoughtfully

We follow leave-no-trace principles and keep group sizes small to minimise our footprint on the trail.

Share the mountains responsibly

We help guests become informed, respectful visitors so the Khumbu remains extraordinary for everyone who follows.
