An introduction

Where adventure meets culture in the Himalayas

The Everest region lies in northeastern Nepal, within the Khumbu district at the foot of the world's highest mountains. Dominated by dramatic ridgelines, glacial rivers, and sky-scraping peaks, it is one of the most visually arresting landscapes on the planet.

Trekkers come for more than the scenery. The Sherpa people whose mountain villages dot the trail network from Lukla to Lobuche have built a culture of extraordinary warmth, resilience, and Buddhist tradition that leaves a lasting impression on every traveller who passes through.

Routes range from the classic Everest Base Camp journey and the scenic Gokyo Lakes circuit to shorter panorama treks and the demanding Three Passes challenge. Whatever your time and fitness, there is a Khumbu route shaped for you.

What awaits you

What makes the Everest region unforgettable

Every step in the Khumbu brings something remarkable to the eye, the spirit, and the understanding of a very different world.

Sherpa Villages

Walk through Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, and Phortse mountain communities shaped by centuries of high-altitude life and a profound relationship with the hills.

Iconic Suspension Bridges

Cross the swing bridges of the Dudh Koshi valley, draped in prayer flags and ringing with the sound of the river far below.

Buddhist Monasteries

Visit Tengboche, Pangboche, and Thyangboche sacred gompas perched on ridges with Ama Dablam and Everest framing every view.

Prayer Flags and High Passes

Feel the wind pull thousands of prayer flags at Namche Hill, Cho La, and Renjo La colour against rock and sky.

Tea House Trekking

The Khumbu has one of the world's great lodge networks. Dal bhat, butter tea, and a warm sleeping bag await at the end of every day on trail.

Panoramic Himalayan Views

From Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri you see four of the world's six highest peaks. Sunrises here have stopped hardened mountaineers in their tracks.

People and place

Sherpa culture and mountain life

The Khumbu is not just a landscape it is home. The Sherpa people have farmed, traded, and practised Buddhism here for generations. Their culture is inseparable from the mountain environment that shaped it.

  • Tengboche Monastery
The Khumbu's largest gompa sits at 3,867m, framed by Ama Dablam. Daily puja ceremonies welcome respectful visitors.
  • Buddhist traditions
Mani stones, prayer wheels, and colourful lungta flags mark every pass and bridge spiritual signposts along the trail.
  • Tea house hospitality
Sherpa families run the lodges along the trail. You eat with them, share the stove warmth, and hear stories the guidebooks don't carry.
  • Mountain village life
Khumjung, Phortse, and Thame are lived-in communities where yaks graze and schoolchildren pass trekkers on the path.
