Everest Base Camp Trek
The iconic journey to the foot of the world's highest peak through Sherpa villages and high-altitude glacial terrain.
From legendary trekking trails and Sherpa mountain villages to monasteries, suspension bridges, and sweeping Himalayan views, the Everest region offers one of the world's most unforgettable adventures.
An introduction
The Everest region lies in northeastern Nepal, within the Khumbu district at the foot of the world's highest mountains. Dominated by dramatic ridgelines, glacial rivers, and sky-scraping peaks, it is one of the most visually arresting landscapes on the planet.
Trekkers come for more than the scenery. The Sherpa people whose mountain villages dot the trail network from Lukla to Lobuche have built a culture of extraordinary warmth, resilience, and Buddhist tradition that leaves a lasting impression on every traveller who passes through.
Routes range from the classic Everest Base Camp journey and the scenic Gokyo Lakes circuit to shorter panorama treks and the demanding Three Passes challenge. Whatever your time and fitness, there is a Khumbu route shaped for you.
What awaits you
Every step in the Khumbu brings something remarkable to the eye, the spirit, and the understanding of a very different world.
Walk through Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, and Phortse mountain communities shaped by centuries of high-altitude life and a profound relationship with the hills.
Cross the swing bridges of the Dudh Koshi valley, draped in prayer flags and ringing with the sound of the river far below.
Visit Tengboche, Pangboche, and Thyangboche sacred gompas perched on ridges with Ama Dablam and Everest framing every view.
Feel the wind pull thousands of prayer flags at Namche Hill, Cho La, and Renjo La colour against rock and sky.
The Khumbu has one of the world's great lodge networks. Dal bhat, butter tea, and a warm sleeping bag await at the end of every day on trail.
From Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri you see four of the world's six highest peaks. Sunrises here have stopped hardened mountaineers in their tracks.
The route
A typical Everest Base Camp trek follows this progression of villages, altitude, and experience each stage with its own character.
Gear checks, permits, and a final briefing with your guide. Soak up Thamel before the mountains take over.
The famous Tenzing-Hillary Airport flight is an adventure in itself. Your trek begins the moment you step off the plane.
A gentle first day following the Dudh Koshi river, crossing the first of the valley's legendary suspension bridges.
The capital of the Khumbu. A rest day here for acclimatisation rewards you with your first clear views of Everest.
Home to the Khumbu's largest monastery, ringed by the walls of Ama Dablam, Everest, and Lhotse.
A high yak-grazing plateau. Acclimatisation hikes to Nangkartshang Peak reveal the full scale of the upper Khumbu.
The last significant settlement before Base Camp. Cold nights and extraordinary starscapes in the thin air.
Stand at the foot of the world's highest mountain, or climb Kala Patthar for the iconic sunrise view of Everest's summit pyramid.

The Khumbu is not just a landscape it is home. The Sherpa people have farmed, traded, and practised Buddhism here for generations. Their culture is inseparable from the mountain environment that shaped it.
Know before you go
The Khumbu rewards preparation. Here is what every first-time visitor should understand before lacing up their boots.
Spring (MarMay) and Autumn (SepNov) offer the clearest skies and most stable conditions. Autumn is the most popular window.
Most Khumbu treks are rated Moderate demanding in terms of distance and altitude, but requiring no technical climbing skill.
All our itineraries include dedicated rest days at altitude. We follow 'climb high, sleep low' principles and monitor guests daily above 4,000m.
The Khumbu trail has comfortable, well-run lodges at every stage. Private rooms are the norm; shared facilities above Namche.
You need a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a TIMS card. We handle all of this on your behalf before departure.
Afternoon clouds are common in spring. Nights are cold at all altitudes pack a good sleeping bag rated to 10C or lower.
Choose your adventure
Whether you have five days or eighteen, there is a route in the Khumbu that fits your pace, fitness, and sense of adventure.
The iconic journey to the foot of the world's highest peak through Sherpa villages and high-altitude glacial terrain.
A shorter, lower-altitude route delivering breathtaking Everest views from Namche Bazaar and Tengboche.
Trade the EBC crowds for the turquoise waters of the Gokyo Valley and a panorama from Gokyo Ri that beats almost anything.
The ultimate Khumbu circuit crossing Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La for unrivalled Himalayan perspective.
Your journey, our expertise
Happy Yak Tours was built in the Khumbu, by people who grew up in these mountains. We bring that intimacy to every itinerary we plan.
Every trek is led by a certified, government-registered Sherpa guide not a hired contractor from Kathmandu. These are their mountains.
Each route is designed with the right pace, rest days, and altitude gain not just to reach the destination, but to enjoy the journey fully.
We follow strict acclimatisation protocols, with built-in rest days and daily oxygen monitoring above 4,000m. Your safety is non-negotiable.
Groups are capped at ten. You get real attention from your guide, not a number in a crowd. Small groups also mean a gentler footprint on the trail.
Tell us your fitness level, budget, and dates we'll match you with the right route and give you honest advice rather than a sales pitch.
From the best dal bhat stops in Namche to quiet detours the trail maps don't show our guides share a Khumbu that most visitors never find.
